Desktop software that’s truly web aware

Do you read Seth Godin’s Blog? Check out this post from Seth’s Blog:

While I’m at it, I think we’re on the edge of two big software breakthroughs. The first is programs that live on the web instead of your desktop (I know, we’ve heard a lot about how this is the next big thing, but it’s almost here) and second is in desktop software that is truly web-aware. That knows the definitions of words. That can update and correct and conform my address book. It’s all still lousy, all still in the dark ages, but there are glimmers of hope.

(from: Data vs. Software)

It caught my eye because it touches on something that comes up from time to time with BlogBridge: why is it not a pure web based application? It comes up enough that I’ve posted a FAQ about it. The short story is that I think both have their place but for what we are trying to do with BlogBridge, only a desktop app would do.

In fact I claim that BlogBridge is “desktop software that is truly web-aware.” More than just knowing definitions of words, or whatever. It extensively (and transparently) makes use of web services (like technorati, del.icio.us, flickr, wordpress, as well as the BlogBridge native web service. In fact this Blog post is being written directly with BlogBridge.)

Still in dark ages? Yes, lots of room to do better.
